Le Mi Mix Fold de Xiaomi

It is sometimes forgotten, but Xiaomi was one of the forerunners of the borderless design which has today been adopted by almost all brands. With the Mi Mix, Xiaomi offered a model that had the same dimensions as an iPhone 7 Plus. But while this iPhone had a 5.5-inch display (with huge bezels and a home screen), the Mi Mix had a 6.4-inch display.

With each generation of Mi Mix smartphones, Xiaomi has never stopped innovating in terms of design. But after the release of the Mi Mix 3, the Chinese brand has not launched a new model (the Mi Mix Alpha has not been marketed).

The good news is that today Xiaomi’s Mi Mix line is back. And this time, the brand innovates by launching its first folding smartphone: the Mi Mix Fold.

Similar device to Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2

On the design side, Xiaomi’s folding smartphone is very reminiscent of the Galaxy Z Fold 2 launched by Samsung in 2020. Indeed, the device folds on a vertical axis and has an external screen that allows you to use the applications even when the device is in use. foldable screen is closed.

In other words, when the device is closed, it works like a smartphone. And when it’s open, it works like a tablet.

The foldable screen of the Mi Mix Fold is AMOLED type, has a diagonal of 8.01 inches and displays a resolution of WQHD + (2480 x 1860). The foldable display also supports Dolby Vision, for multimedia content. Xiaomi can boast that it offers the largest foldable screen on the market and this screen has no notch or bubble for the front camera.

The external screen is also AMOLED type, with a diagonal of 6.52 inches, a resolution of 2520 x 840 pixels, as well as a refresh rate of 90 Hz. This screen has a bubble for the front camera. When it comes to durability, Xiaomi says the Mi Mix Fold underwent 200,000 bends during reliability tests.

Of course, under the hood, Xiaomi’s folding smartphone uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 888 SoC, which is also used by the Mi 11 and Mi 11 Ultra.

The Mi Mix Fold has many interesting arguments

But if you think the Mi Mix Fold is a mere copy of Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 2, then you are wrong. Indeed, if the design of this model is somewhat reminiscent of Samsung’s foldable smartphone, it also includes some unique technologies that allow Xiaomi to stand out.

First of all, when it comes to the graphical interface of the operating system, Xiaomi has developed a PC mode. When this is activated, the OS adopts an interface reminiscent of that of computers, with an equivalent of the Start menu, as well as the possibility of opening windows, and the possibility of dragging and dropping between two apps. Thus, Xiaomi not only positions the Mi Mix Fold as a competitor for tablets, but also as a competitor for certain computers.

When it comes to photo and video, the Mi Mix Fold also uses two technologies that could help to significantly improve the quality of the images.

First, there is the Surge C1 chip. This is a chip designed by Xiaomi, independent of the SoC, which takes care of image processing.

As the Chinese brand explains in a press release: “Mi Mix Fold launches the Surge C1 processor – a professional image processing chip developed by Xiaomi. The result of two years of development and an R & D investment of 140 million RMB (editor’s note, more than 18 million euros), this chip offers exceptionally high performance while taking up a small processor and storage space. This allows it to handle an improved 3A algorithm and low-light focusing capabilities for more precise autofocus, autoexposure and auto white balance, dramatically improving image quality. “

In other words, thanks to this chip specially designed for photography, the Mi Mix Fold should enjoy better performance in this area. In addition, the announcement of this chip shows Xiaomi’s desire to become the new leader in mobile photography (while its Mi 11 Ultra has just beaten Huawei’s Mate 40 Pro + on the DXoMARK ranking).

But in addition to using a new chip designed by Xiaomi, the Mi Mix Fold also uses a new optical technology: a liquid lens.

As the builder explains: “The liquid lens uses the principle of human eye bionics, forming a lens-like structure with transparent fluid wrapped in film, very different from traditional optical lenses. The radius of curvature of the spherical surface can be changed with precision thanks to a high-precision motor based on the technology developed by Xiaomi, which enables 3X optical zoom, telephoto up to 30X and a minimum focus distance of 3 cm. One lens practically covers the functions of two lenses. “

Thanks to this technology, the Mi Mix Fold has three sensors, which can perform four functions: a high-resolution 108-megapixel sensor, an ultra-wide-angle (123 °) of 13 megapixels, a 30x zoom of 8 megapixels (3x optical zoom ), and an 8-megapixel macro.

Finally, Xiaomi’s Mi Mix Fold also stands out from devices in the same category thanks to its autonomy and fast charging. This is because the device has a fairly large 5020mAh battery that can be charged to 100% in 37 minutes.

Unfortunately, for the moment, this new folding smartphone is only marketed in China. It costs the equivalent of 1,300 euros for a model with 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage, the equivalent of 1,425 euros for a model with 12 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage, and the equivalent of 1,685 euros for the model with 16 GB of RAM and 512 GB of storage.
