Zapping car news The expert’s eye: aboard the Mazda MX-30

The Toyota GT 86 was presented in 2012 and nine years later its descendant made its appearance with a totally updated look as well as a new boxer engine. No less than 200,000 GT 86 coupes have been sold across the world, which made the Japanese brand want to continue the adventure by updating its little bomb. The new GR 86 thus adopts a front face more fluid than before and almond headlights a bit less aggressive than the lights of the previous version. Same song on the back, with redesigned optics and visually linked via a black band that crosses the trunk. With 4.26 long, 1.77 m wide and 1.31 m high, the GR 86 retains the dimensions of its predecessor and is fitted with aerodynamic components derived from competition models.

On the engine side, even if the trend is more downsizing, the Japanese manufacturers have chosen a larger boxer engine, going from 2.0 to 2.4. This mechanical basis is shared with the new Subaru BRZ. The power of this four-cylinder flat is increased to 235 hp against 200 hp previously for the 2.0, it is transmitted to the rear wheels via a manual gearbox or an automatic, six-speed in both cases. The maximum torque of the GR 86 is 250 Nm. The 0 to 100 km / h is dispatched in 1.1 seconds faster than before, with only 6.3 seconds on the exercise.

The petrol unit placed at the front of the GR 86, lowered in its engine compartment, as well as the use of materials such as aluminum for its roof, allows for an extremely low center of gravity. The manufacturer also indicates that the torsional rigidity has been improved by around 50% compared to the previous model. Finally, the infotainment system consists of a sober 7-inch TFT screen in the center of the dashboard while the rest of the cabin changes very little compared to the previous model. The EyeSight driver assistance technology borrowed from Subaru is also available on the Toyota GR 86. This system offers increased safety on board thanks to advanced preventive and anti-collision technologies.

Available in the fall of 2021 in Japan, this naturally aspirated coupe should land in Europe a little later, but at what price? … Nothing is specified for the French market.
