Do you own a bicycle but you don’t use it? Either because your body is no longer 20 years old and pedaling becomes complicated. Either because you are the lazy type and you do not love to swallow kilometers while pedaling! Whatever the reason.
But your bike could be reborn from its ashes by going electric! This is what VIRVOLT, a young Parisian company, offers. In a few hours your classic bike becomes an electric bike with the help of a conversion kit. A way of making the new and the current with the old. For a roughly equivalent price, turning your bike into an electric is rather a good plan.
What is Virvolt?
To date, VIRVOLT transforms your bike at Carrefour, at the Carré-Sénart Shopping Center (77) as well as in two Parisian Monoprix stores (Beaugrenelle and Montparnasse). Concretely, Virvolt technicians install a motor in the rear wheel or in the crankset and the battery on the frame or on the luggage rack. It all depends on the model of your bike.
How much does it cost ?
Electrify your bike with Virvolt costs between 800 and 1200 € depending on the facilities. Soon a solution for less than € 600 will be offered. You should know that an electric bike costs on average € 1,800. If you use the aid offered by the Ile-de-France region which is 500 €, your bike will cost you 1300 €…
Which is always more expensive than electrifying it. Of course there are entry-level electric bikes for less than 1000 € but the battery-motor equivalent of Virvolt corresponds more to those of electric bikes with a price of around € 1,800. “The goal is to put electric mobility in everyone’s hands, at a low cost, with quality components” tells Jérôme-Aristide Gaymard, the founder of Virvolt on francebleu.fr.
For a cargo model purchased € 1000 without electric assistance, for example, this amounts to € 1300 to electrify it… A new electric cargo bike costs around € 5000… The calculation is quite simple to perform! And some communities offer aid for electrification. The City of Paris covers 33% of the amount excluding tax, for example. This further reduces the final cost. A price that can fall further thanks to the support of municipalities such as that of the City of Paris, which covers 33% excluding taxes of the amount of electrification.
For which bikes?
Virvolt technology adapts to all “mechanical” bikes since 1990… No problem therefore to electrify the bike of your father or mother to which you hold so much! Today, 50 bikes are electrified each month by Virvolt, so there is a real need from consumers. And tomorrow ? Maybe yours?
