Nissan Qashqai's compact crossover goes upmarket and in price

The third generation of the Nissan Qashqai crossover was wanted more muscular, sharp and modern.

The total length increases from 31 mm to 4 425 mm, the height increases from 35 mm to 1,625 mm and the width increases from 29 mm to 1,835 mm, all for a stronger presence on the road.

The posture of the Qashqai is more impressive, with prominent wings, an extended wheelbase of 19 mm to 2 665 mm and alloy rims up to 20 inches.

The front of the Qashqai features a Nissan V-grille enlarged, with a chrome finish and chrome accents.

The Qashqai is flanked by full-LED ultra-thin matrix headlights with boomerang shaped daytime running lights.

Sideways, the Qashqai feels more dynamic, with a single body line running front to back, giving the car a horizontal presence.

The Nissan Qashqai is available in 9 body colors with 5 two-tone combinations (Metallic Black with Squale Gray roof, or Magnetic Blue, Fuji Red, Clay Gray, or Lunar White with Metallic Black roof), creating 14 variants to choose from.

The interior atmosphere is refined. A white mood lighting is used throughout the cabin.

Particular attention has been paid to orders with a tactile sensation.

The Qashqai offers a infotainment system integrating a wide range of connected services. These services include smartphone integration, on-board Wi-Fi for up to seven devices and the NissanConnect app that allows monitoring and interaction with the vehicle.

NissanConnect’s 9-inch center display, compatible with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay including wireless Apple CarPlay, provides access to navigation, entertainment and vehicle settings.

The instrument cluster consists of a 12.3 inch high definition TFT display. It offers a choice of several configurations to display meters, navigation, entertainment, traffic or vehicle information.

A head-up display 10.8-inch monitor projects navigation, driving aids and traffic information onto the windshield in the driver’s field of vision.

The Nissan Qashqai offers compatibility with Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. The system supports a wide range of commands, including the ability to send destinations to the car’s GPS by talking to its voice assistant.

The 3D map navigation integrates the real-time traffic conditions, remote map updates, Google Street View, fuel prices, door-to-door navigation and the My Car Finder feature.

Connectivity extends to all passengers thanks to the center console offering front and rear USB-A and USB-C sockets.

A electric tailgate with hands-free opening allows easy access to the trunk.

Improvements to the ergonomic design of the doors make it easier to enter and exit, especially in tight spaces such as parking lots.

Conversely, where space permits, the rear doors open to 85 °, allowing easier access to install children in their seats.

The Qashqai is available with two 1.3 liter Mild Hybrid 140 hp and 158 hp Xtronic petrol engines and with the e-Power motorization.

Available in traction (with the Mild Hybrid 140 hp and Mild Hybrid 158 hp Xtronic engines) and 4-wheel drive (with the Mild Hybrid 158 hp Xtronic engine), the Nissan Qashqai offers a 6-speed manual gearbox and an automatic transmission. Xtronic.

The Mild Hybrid 12 V system offers more torque, extended engine shutdown when stationary and a quick restart.

During deceleration, energy is recovered by regeneration and stored in the lithium-ion battery. The energy is then used during stops, the freewheeling phases on the automatic transmission and makes it possible to provide additional engine torque.

During freewheel braking, at a speed of less than 18 km / h, the heat engine switches off and the stored energy is used to supply the vehicle’s electrical equipment. This makes it possible to stop the engine for longer and reduce fuel consumption.

The gasoline block 1.3 DiG-T 140 ch delivers a maximum torque of 240 Nm.

The gasoline block 1.3 DiG-T 158 ch Xtronic automatic transmission delivers a maximum torque of 270 Nm from 1,800 rpm.

The 4-wheel drive all-wheel drive adapts to outdoor conditions with five driving modes: Standard, Eco, Sport, Snow and Off-Road. If one or more wheels slip, the action time of the 4-wheel drive system is 0.2 seconds.

Nissan’s e-Power powertrain is made up of a 190 hp electric motor that powers the wheels, a 158 hp variable compression ratio battery and heat generator, a generator and a inverter. The system combines the linear acceleration characteristic of an electric vehicle without the need for recharging.

The gasoline engine is used only to generate electricity, while the wheels are only driven by the electric motor.

Nissan Qashqai e-Power drivers can start, accelerate, decelerate and brake using only the accelerator pedal (e-Pedal driving).

The Nissan crossover is based on the CMF-C platform of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance.

The body benefits from lighter materials, as well as advanced stamping and welding techniques to increase strength but also reduce weight.

The front and rear doors, front fenders and hood are all made of aluminum, which saves 21 kg in weight compared to the previous Qashqai. The rear hatch door of the Qashqai is made of composite material, which saves 2.6 kg.

Thanks to these manufacturing techniques, the body of the crossover is overall lighter by 63 kg and stiffer by 48% than the previous one.

The Nissan Qashqai has MacPherson axles at the front and rear. The rear suspension Traction versions fitted with rims up to 19 inches are based on a torsion bar. All-wheel drive versions and models with 20-inch rims benefit from a multi-link rear suspension.

The power steering setup provides better feel around zero point and reduced friction.

The Nissan Qashqai with automatic transmission Xtronic is equipped with ProPilot driver assistance technology with Navi-link.

On the fast track, the technologie ProPilot with Navi-link manages direction, distances and speed, on a single lane. The system manages acceleration, braking to a stop and restarts in traffic jams. The technology is able to restart automatically if the vehicle has been stationary for less than three seconds and traffic in front of the car is resuming.

The system is able to adapt the speed of the car according to external circumstances: when the car enters a lower speed limit zone on the highway, the system can read the traffic signs and take into account the data of navigation to slow the crossover to the appropriate speed.

The system can also use navigation data to adjust speed when approaching curves that have a very tight radius.

The Qashqai has a intelligent emergency braking with cyclist and intersection detection in addition to pedestrian detection.

The Qashqai has the frontal collision avoidance warning system. Using advanced radar technology, the sensors are able to read the road beyond the car in front to detect and alert if a vehicle suddenly brakes. If so, the crossover will automatically brake to reduce the risk of a collision.

The Qashqai can also intervene to prevent a collision when reversing by braking if an obstacle is detected nearby.

A central airbag deploys between the two front seats to prevent front row occupants from colliding in a side impact. The central airbag complements the driver and passenger airbags, as well as the standard side and curtain airbags.

The Qashqai also has a side protection alert, which alerts the driver to the risk of contact with an object or pillar on the side of the vehicle.

Smart LED headlights with matrix technology adapt the shape of the beam to the road and other road users. The beam is divided into 12 elements which activate and deactivate independently of each other upon detection of an oncoming vehicle. The light beam is projected further and more widely, but without dazzling other drivers.

Qashqai has recorded more than 5 million units sold worldwide since 2007, including 3 million in Europe including 300,000 units in France.

The Nissan crossover is offered in five trim levels (Visia, Acenta, N-Connecta, Tekna and Tekna plus) from 28 990 euros.

The first deliveries of the Qashqai will take place in the summer of 2021.

Qashqai is produced in England.
