Herma progresse malgré la crise

The pandemic does not appear to have had any impact on Herma sales. Quite the contrary … The German manufacturer of labeling machines, which also combines the caps of producer of adhesive materials and labels, ended the 2020 financial year with a 5% increase in turnover, to 380.8 million euros. The activity of its three divisions was generally stable. Self-adhesive materials were able to benefit from the new means offered by the Filderstadt plant (Germany), which entered service in the spring of 2020, which enabled the German company to distribute customer orders between two independent production sites and to thus implement extensive hygiene measures. Result of the races: production has not stopped, despite the sanitary constraints. Sales even increased by 8% from 223.7 to 241.1 million euros. “The new plant also gives us every chance to develop further in particularly lucrative segments”, remarks Guido Spachtholz, appointed Managing Director following the retirement of Thomas Baumgärtner.

Contrasting trends

On the other hand, activity fell slightly in the labels division, with sales falling from 84.5 to 82.6 million euros, due to contrasting trends in the markets served. In particular, while office label sales have weakened due to containment measures in Europe, school products have advanced thanks to online sales. Likewise, in industry, automobiles and chemicals have reduced their orders while logistics have increased them as has the pharmaceutical industry and body care. On the labeling machine side, however, the group took advantage of its strong presence in the pharmaceutical segment to make progress. In this division, turnover increased from 52.2 to 53.3 million euros. The forecasts for the current financial year remain cautious given the evolution of the pandemic and the consequences of Brexit. The group is counting on single-digit growth. “Sales and orders received in the first two months of the current fiscal year indicate that this is an ambitious but achievable goal,” said Sven Schneller, the company’s second managing director. The number of employees increased slightly year over year, from 1097 to 1106 units. The export has also increased. It now represents 62.8% of turnover.
